Ultra-processed food? Forever chemicals? Declining birth rates? What’s behind rising cancer in the under-50s? 26 Januari 2025
In 2022, around 16% of the 20 million people with cancer worldwide were under 50. Cancer has always been markedly more of an older person’s disease, says Lynn Turner, director of research at Worldwide Cancer Research. But between 1990 and 2019, the incidence of the disease in under-50s rose by 79%, according to research published in the British Medical Journal in 2023. That short timeframe means the rise cannot be explained by genetic factors, according to Tracey Woodruff, director of the University of California, San Francisco’s programme on reproductive health and the environment.
In 2019, some of the most common cancers in under-50s were colorectal, breast and skin cancer. The early-onset cancers that increased the fastest between 1990 and 2019 were prostate cancer and cancers of the nasopharynx (upper part of the throat behind the nose). Breast, stomach and bowel cancers – among others – were linked with some of the highest death tolls.
Colorectal: processed meat and ultra-processed foods
In 2024, Cancer Research UK and several other organisations funded a research project called Prospect looking into the global rise in colorectal cancer in under-50s. The trend is particularly concerning in England, where rates seem to be rising faster than anywhere else in the world except for New Zealand, Chile and Puerto Rico. Prospect will investigate a variety of risk factors, including poor diet.
- Nearly 1 in 2 people born in the UK in 1961 will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime.
New figures published today show the NHS diagnosed over 11,000 more cancers in 2022, reaching a new record high level – with almost 950 people a day getting a diagnosis in England.
The latest cancer registration statistics show more cancers were diagnosed in 2022, with 346,217 new diagnoses – on average 948 a day – compared to 329,664 in 2021 (an increase of 5%).
The figures show that among men there was a 7% increase in overall cancer diagnoses in 2022, from 167,917 to 180,877. This was mainly due to the increase in prostate cancers which rose by more than a quarter to 54,732. In women, there was a 2% increase in diagnoses, from 161,747 to 165,340.
After prostate and breast cancer, the next most commonly diagnosed in 2022 were lung and then bowel cancer.
Increase sharper than in any age group and likely linked to obesity levels, junk food and inactivity, say experts

Early onset cancers
are still uncommon. About 90% of all cancers affect people over the age
of 50, but experts say the upward trend is still worrying. |
The number of people under 50 being diagnosed with cancer in the UK has risen 24% in two decades, a sharper increase than any other age group, according to figures experts say are likely linked to soaring obesity levels, cheap junk food and inactivity.Early onset incidence rates grew from 132.9 per 100,000 people in 1995 to 164.6 in 2019, analysis of data shows. About 35,000 under-50s are now developing cancer every year, almost 100 young women and men a day, the research reveals.
Meanwhile, there is mounting concern that a global epidemic of cancer among young people may be emerging. The explosion in cases was a key focus of discussion this weekend at the world’s largest cancer conference, the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

2.7. Quantitative Phase Imaging
BECs were seeded in a 6‐well plate and treated with a fixed quantity of EVs (103 EVs/cell) daily for 5 days. BECs were treated with CRISPRMAX/Cas9 or electroporated 48 and 24 h before the experiments, respectively. Cells were imaged live for 24 h at 37°C using the quantitative phase‐contrast microscope HoloMonitor (PhiOptics). Three different fields per sample were captured at 10‐min intervals.
Hyperacute Response Proteins (HARPs) synthesized on γ-tubulin-FTO-MARK4 translation microdomains upon exposure to stress, regulate stress response in cancer
Posted January 25, 2025.
To better understand the timing of the FTO-driven survival benefit, we placed cells under a HoloMonitor microscope, which can measure growth and cell confluence by continuous imaging based on optical density signals of unstained cells, thus avoiding any additional stress from live straining.

3.2. Holographic Monitoring of Cell Behavior in Response to GSH
4. Discussion (notera forskarnas syn på HoloMonitor)
The phase holographic cell imaging system HoloMonitor is amazing; the software brings the possibility to follow single cells in time-lapse experiments to quantify their physical (area, perimeter, volume, irregularity, etc.) and behavioral (motility, migration, speed, etc.) characteristics. It is possible to select few tens of cells. It is also possible to select the place to be analyzed inside the wells, which is very convenient in light of cell cultures often being heterogeneous. Such a process takes time before starting acquisition; it may be problematic to study very fast responses, but it is essential to insure efficient measurements.

Advances in Telecentric Digital Holographic Microscopy: From Theoretical Foundations to Biomedical Applications
Modern advances in reducing pixel sizes have contributed significantly to the progress of digital holography. The Fourier method was further developed for complex optical field numerical reconstruction. The first report on introducing digital holography into light microscopy was in 1996, making it possible to 3D image and track biological samples via a single exposure. Recently, a series of commercial digital holographic microscope (DHM) companies, such as Lync´ ee Tec (2003), Phi Inc (2004) and Tomocube Inc (2010), have emerged, as seen in Fig. 1.3. The fast reconstruction speed and flexible configuration are advantageous in applications ranging from particle tracking, life science, and micro-systems.

Bio-inspired 3D-printed phantom: Encoding cellular heterogeneity for characterization of quantitative phase imaging
Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) has proven to be a valuable tool for advanced biological and pharmacological research, providing phase information for the study of cell features and physiology in label-free conditions. The next step for QPI to become a gold standard is the quantitative assessment of the phase gradients over the different microscopy setups.
